United Reformed Church

Dover Road, Northfleet

Northfleet URC is grouped with three other churches in the North Kent URC group. These are St Paul's URC, Singlewell Road, Gravesend; Hartley URC and Southfleet URC.

Northfleet URC began as an Independent Church and was operating under the jurisdiction of Princes Street Congregational Church.

In February 1853 a membership was formed at Northfleet Chapel and it was affiliated with the Kent Congregational Association. The URC was formed in 1972 by the union of the Congregational Church in England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church of England.

The URC has continued to express its deep commitment to the visible unity of the whole Church. It united in 1981 with the Re-formed Churches of Christ and in April 2000 with the Congregational Church in Scotland. It continues talks with other traditions and in more than 400 local churches it has united with other denominations.

Local URC's share together in 80 District Councils, which are gathered into 11 Provincial Synods, 13 Synods and 2 National Synods.

Each local church:

  • welcomes those who come from any church background or none
  • arranges its own worship, witness and service
  • celebrates the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper
  • has regular church meetings of members and an elected body of ordained elders who, with the ministers, share pastoral and leadership responsibilities
  • seeks to develop ecumenical relationships

The membership of Northfleet URC supports the local ecumenical partnership of the Ebbsfleet Covenant and the work of the Northfleet Churches' Neighbourhood Centre.
